STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 12, 2013

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

"Families hungry for something to sink their teeth into will have their appetites sated when Scholastic Storybook Treasures™ releases an all new DVD featuring delectable tales about food with THE RED HEN…AND MORE COOKING STORIES!  Highlighted by the eye-popping take on the story of a red hen and her adventures in baking by the Caldecott Award winning father-daughter team of Ed Emberley and Rebecca Emberley, the brand new DVD also features other stories about cooking including “Bread Comes to Life”, a live action film narrated by Lily Tomlin, Jane Yolen’s modern day classic “How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food?” and the hilarious tale of pastry run amok in “Arnie the Doughnut”, narrated by Michael McKean.

In the Emberley’s sparkling version of a classic tale, Red Hen finds a recipe for a Simply Splendid Cake and asks her friends the cat, the rat, and the frog to help with the preparations. But it seems as though her friends want no part in the cake until it’s ready to eat. Will they decide to pitch in, or let Red Hen do all of the hard work?  Find out in this highly enjoyable adaptation, which is joined by three other classic tales, as well as a Read-Along function which highlights the words as they are spoken, allowing young viewers to follow along with the narrators, who include such celebs as Tomlin (“Desperate Housewives”, “The Magic School Bus”) and McKean (“Homeland”, Spinal Tap, “Laverne and Shirley”)."

·         Easy-to-follow recipe for how to bake your own splendid cake!

My Thoughts:

Thanks to this new DVD release, Savannah helped Mommy in the kitchen make a cake for everyone to enjoy this past weekend.  After watching the four fun-filled animated stories that make up this DVD, Savannah couldn't stop asking to help out in the kitchen.  In the past, she would help with mixing and taste tasting, but this time I let her help measure and pour ingredients into the bowl and baking pan.  She felt like a big girl afterwards, and was so proud of what she was able to bake, when showing off the cake.  She even tried her luck at frosting the cake, but I had to take over, as she was sampling the chocolate frosting more than she was adding it to the cake. :-)

While Savannah's favorite story was "The Red Hen," she did enjoy watching "Bread Comes to Life," as she finally learned where bread comes from.  And, when Daddy came home the other day, she couldn't stop talking about bread and what she learned, as we sat down to dinner and enjoy bread Savannah helped me prep for the bread machine.

I love having my little baker in the kitchen with me, and can't wait until her little sister, Arabella, is big enough and able to join us.  But, in the meantime, they can enjoy "The Red Hen" and other cooking adventures thanks to this fun, new DVD from Scholastic Storybook Treasures and New Kideo?

And, if you are looking for  a way to get your little ones excited about food and baking, why not pick up a copy of this new releases?  As soon as the the DVD began playing, Savannah couldn't stop asking about cooking and "What's that?"  We thoroughly enjoyed this DVD, and plan to watch it again this week, before we get back in the kitchen and bake some more. :-)

Disclosure: I was sent a sample from the vendor in order to write up an honest review.  The views above are mine and mine alone.
