Synopsis:
The Gruffalo’s Child is based on the companion book written by
Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The Gruffalo tells
his child an extraordinary story of “The Big Bad Mouse,” warning her
never to go in the woods alone because there is a terrible creature
lurking there. Waiting until her father falls asleep, the Gruffalo’s
Child sneaks out into the deep dark woods to see The Big Bad Mouse for
herself. Along the way she runs into a snake, an owl, and a fox and
discovers that while they have similar features to The Big Bad Mouse,
they are, in fact, not him. Just as she is about to give up her search,
she stumbles upon a tiny mouse. Cautious of her, the mouse listens to
what The Gruffalo’s Child is looking for, and then decides to reveal his
big bad secret!
My Thoughts:
If you saw The Gruffalo and loved it, then you will love this sequel, which centers around the Gruffalo's daughter. What I like best about the sequel and the original film is the simplicity in it. With today's animation and CGI effects, this film used both CG and clay animation to bring the story to life.
I was given the opportunity to review both the DVD and book, and loved both. Both are good for children ages 4+, and at only 40 minutes in length, this short film will surely become a family favorite in your house, as it has ours. In addition to the simple storyline, and beautiful yet simple animation, the music in this sequel is similar to the original. I love when music is used to heighten the emotion in scenes, and this movie is a great example of this.
Don't worry as I will not spoil the ending for you. But, know that the Gruffalo's child learns in the end that the father is always there for her, and is only looking out for her. A great message for young children who are at the stage where they think their parents are being too overprotective.
Even though we received this DVD and book over the weekend, we have seen the movie a handful of times, and Savannah has been asking for it each night at bedtime. Definitely worth picking up and adding to your movie collection.
