My Thoughts:

If you follow my blog, then you know that Angelina Ballerina is my daughter Savannah's favorite HIT Entertainment series.  When she is not watching it daily on the Sprout Channel, she is watching her favorite episodes on Netflix and Amazon, in addition to her evergrowing DVD collection. :-)

So, when she noticed that I had received this new DVD to review, she was eecstatic, and couldn't wait for her little sister, Arabella, to get up so they could watch it together.  Since Angelina Ballerina is watched daily in our house, Arabella has grown accustomed to seeing the mouseling and her friends on television, and now likes the show, too.

When she finally woke from her nap, this new DVD was put on.  And, as soon as the catchy intro began, my two ballerinas began dancing and spinning around the living room.    This is a great DVD, which includes 5 episodes that touch on various cultural backgrounds, including Chinese and Spanish.  When the mouselings began counting in Spanish, Savannah got excited and counted along.  It was hard to determine their favorite episodes of the five, as they have watched each one a handful of times since we received the review DVD.  And, each and every time I put the DVD on, we have to watch all five episodes in one sitting. The baby sits through and doesn't grow tired of it.

So, if you have an Angelina Ballerina fan in your house, then they will love this new DVD arriving in stores and online on January 8th, as well as On Demand and digital download.

My Thoughts:

Now with two Barney fans in the house, you can only imagine how excited the girls were when I put this new DVD on for them to watch.  When they weren't yelling out for Barney, they sat together on the living room floor, enjoying the three fun-filled episodes that make up this DVD.  And, each and every time a song and dance number came up, in unison, they got up and began dancing around the living room.  And, when I asked if they liked it when it was over, they both clapped and cheered -- so, I guess that is a "Yes."

There favorite episode of the three was "The Amazing Captain Pickles."  The name alone made them chuckle.  And, when they were done watching the episodes, I played the bonus karaoke of "I Love You" for them to sing and dance along to.  I ended up joining in and singing and dancing with them, and ending with a big hug and kiss. :-)

If your little one is a fan of Barney and Friends like my girls, then they will love this new DVD coming out next week on DVD, On Demand and Digital Download.  So, mark your calendars and make sure you pick it or download when it becomes available on Jan. 8th.

JUVENILE FICTION
24 Pages, 8.25 x 10.25
Formats: PDF, Hardcover Picture Book, Mobipocket, EPUB, Apple EPUB
Hardcover Picture Book, $14.95 (US $14.95) (CA $15.95)
ISBN 9788415241980

Summary:

"Whimsical illustrations bring a child’s dreams to life in this beautiful and imaginative bedtime story. Every evening when he goes to bed, the night sits at the child’s bedside and reads him a story. Some stories are sweet, others are magical, and still others are mysterious, but they all inspire his dreams as he drifts off into a peaceful good night’s sleep. "

My Thoughts:

One of the things I love about being a parent to young children is their imaginations.  With the hustle and bustle of day to day tasks, you can't help but smile when you child says or does something funny.  By watching them you can see how innocent and pure they are, and the stories they think about just reiterate all the possibilities the World offers them.  And, when it comes time for bed, oftentimes my oldest daughter asks me to tell her a story that I make up on the spot, as she finds these most enjoyable.  Sometimes I stick with princess or fairytale stories, while other days I will share simple stories that touch on things we did or saw during that day.  So, when I heard about this recent release, I couldn't wait to share it with the girls.

Instead of me having to make up a story on the spot, I told Savannah that the night was going to share magical stories with her.  As I pointed to the night time sky out her bedroom window, she quickly rushed into her bed and under her sheets, ready for me to read away.  I hadn't read the book first to myself, so I was in for a treat with her.  The illustrations alone are breathtaking and really play to a child's imagination. A few times we both got lost in the illustrations, are they really do pull you in.  But, as we read this cute and whimsical ready for dreamland story, I could see Savannah finding enjoyment in it, and knew that her dreams that night would be filled with magic.  Since reading this book to her that night, she continues to ask for it at bedtime, and even for her afternoon nap.  How can I say "No," when it has also become one of my favorites to read and admire the illustrations.

If you are looking for a fun dreamland book to share with your children for 2013, why not pick up "A Night Time Story" by Roberto Aliaga today.  It is also available in Spanish, too. :-)

Children's Book Review -- Good Night Connecticut by Christina Vrba

Good Night Connecticut

In addition to this state, there are also many other states available.

Ages 0-3; Grades up to Pre-school
Good Night Our World series
JUVENILE FICTION
20 Pages, 6 x 6
Formats: Board Book, Mobipocket, Apple EPUB, PDF, EPUB
PDF, $4.95 (EU $3.59) (CA $4.95) (AU $4.95) (US $4.95)
ISBN 9781602197367

Summary:

"Many of North America’s most beloved regions are artfully celebrated in these board books designed to soothe children before bedtime while instilling an early appreciation for the continent’s natural and cultural wonders. Each book stars a multicultural group of people visiting the featured area’s attractions, and rhythmic language guides children through the passage of both a single day and the four seasons while saluting the iconic aspects of each place."

My Thoughts:

This is the forth book I have shared with my daughters from the Good Night series put out by One World of Books.  I had already shared the Good Night Boston book earlier in the year (as I am from MA and the Boston area originally), but I couldn't wait to receive the CT version, as this is where we have taken up roots and are raising our girls.  One of the reasons we chose to make the move to CT was for the beautiful shorelines, as well as the closeness to both MA, RI and NY.  And, once we began weekend drives to explore the area further, we fell in love with the many family attractions like Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium, Lake Compounce, the USS Nautilus submarine and naval base in Groton, CT, as well as all the other hidden gems that make up beautiful CT.

So, when I received this book, I couldn't help but read it through one time and seeing which locations in CT the author and illustrator chose to focus on.  I am happy to see many of the places I listed in the previous paragraph, as well as the quiet country roads and old stone walls and the town greens.  I live in the Quiet Corner part of the state and live amongst many of these quiet country roads and town greens, so I can see why they chose to include this.  And, when I got to the end of the board book, I couldn't help but smile, as this book really does a great job in highlighting popular family-friendly locations/attractions, and would make any CT resident happy to own this book.  Once I got around to sharing this book with the girls, I was happy to see Savannah pointing out and recognizing places we have taken her and Arabella, too.  And, when she saw the rock walls, she ran to the window and pointed to the ones that surround our house with the neighbors.

The storybook itself is easy to understand for little ones, but I think they will enjoy the illustrations more, as they are so colorful and lively.  As I flipped through the pages and talked about the places we have been, I began thinking about the memories we have shared with the girls thus far and the many more to come as they get the opportunity to grow up in beautiful CT. :-)

So, if you are a fan of the Good Night Series book, and love CT or just want to share popular attractions and landmarks of states with your family, then you will want to pick up a copy of this book.  Or, if you plan to visit CT in the new year, this would be a great way to get the children excited about some of the places they may seen.

Febreze Announces Winner of the ‘Best of Holidays Past’ Contest

On Dec. 24th, one lucky winner in Minnesota received $10,000 and memorable holiday experience he will never forget.  Watch Febreze Deliver the Holiday to a dad having to live in a hotel room while he is away from his children working this holiday season:

"Derrick Siedel from Pembine, Wisconsin was announced the winner of Febreze’s first-ever “Best of Holidays Past” Contest, which sought to bring holiday cheer to those who were unable to be with their loved ones this winter. Derrick, a cable worker employed out of state in Grand Marais, Minnesota, was unknowingly nominated by his fiancée, who was saddened by the thought of Derrick having to spend the holidays in a hotel room instead of being with his family.
“Derrick works so hard to take care of us all and deserves some happiness even if he can’t be at home,” said Rebecca VanGinkel, Derrick’s fiancée. “He lives in a hotel while he's working, so he never really feels completely comfortable, and he barely ever gets a home cooked meal. While he has every reason to complain, he never does, and is always trying to cheer us up by sending us home cards, letters, and little presents.”

“We were so moved by Rebecca’s nomination for Derrick, we immediately knew we had to help brighten his holiday spirits and bring the comfort of home to his hotel room,” said Michelle Lohman, North America Communications Manager for Febreze.

So Febreze did just that, and set out to bring Derrick a holiday experience he would never forget. In just twenty-four hours the Febreze team completely transformed Derrick’s hotel room into a holiday wonderland, complete with a Christmas stocking put together by Derrick’s children and a few cherished ornaments from back home in Wisconsin. Febreze was also on hand for the surprise unveiling to present Derrick with a $10,000 grand prize.

To help aid in creating the ultimate holiday experience for Derrick, Febreze asked their Facebook fans to share their favorite holiday memories – ranging from childhood toys, delicious desserts, nostalgic scents and even their favorite holiday sweater! The winning memories all helped create the perfect surprise holiday celebration for Derrick. Some of the memorable holiday items submitted included: Easy Bake Oven as the Most Popular Toy, Charlie Brown Christmas as the Most Memorable TV Episode and Fresh Pine Tree as the Most Memorable Scent.

This year, Febreze released two new limited edition holiday scents - Winter Magic and Glow and Holiday Bloom and Cheer to complement the popular Glistening Alpine and Cranberries and Frost holiday scents. All holidays scents will be available in Candles, Air Effects, Set & Refresh, Fabric Refresher, and NOTICEables to help create a festive atmosphere in every home this holiday season. For more information on the holiday scents, visit www.febreze.com."

Spotlight on Mom -- Kamala Corkin of Drool Monkey Organics

Drool Monkey Organics
Drool Monkey

It seems like I have spent the past two years trying to find great teething products for my daughters, as they are 1 and 2 1/2 yrs. old, and always seem to be teething.  Just the other day, Savannah begin breaking in two molars, so she hasn't been a happy camper.  Along with teething, both girls suffer from constant drooling, diaper rashes, runny noses and fuss throughout the day and night.  I have tried chilled teething rings, teething biscuits, teething toys, etc., but nothing seemed to bring relief or comforted them.  That was until I received the Drool Monkey, an organic solution for teething babies (and toddlers).  What I loved best besides containing no toxic dyes, no chemical flame retardants and no synthetic fabrics, is that it is also so versatile.  Not only does the Drool Monkey organic teething lovie offers teething relief, but it can also be used as a rattle, burp cloth and security blankie.

♥ Made from custom-woven 100% Certified Organic Cotton fabric.
Prevents drool rash – When baby chews, our absorbent fabric wicks away moisture from
baby’s delicate skin.
♥ Multi-tasks as a teether,  burp cloth, nursing cover,  sun shield, and security blanket all in one!
♥ Stays Clean with reusable drawstring bag & machine washable and dryable.
♥ Relieves teething discomfort with knotable fabric for baby to chew on.
♥ Entertains with a fun rattle inside.
♥ Stays-Put on stroller, carrier and teething toys with two removable tethers.

Poor Arabella only has the bottom two teeth (for the past few months), but her gums have been swollen, and it looks like she will be getting a handful of upper and lower teeth any day now.  Before I was sent this organic cloth teether for review, I would find her throwing the teething products I had purchased to help bring relief, and instead gnaw on Savannah's toys, or even the corner of her pack and play.  Kamala Corkin, the mom inventor behind this ingenious product that is definitely a must have for all moms with babies, sent me a sample of this and her organic hankies to review.  As soon as I handed the Drool Monkey to Arabella, her eyes lit up and she she began shaking the monkey.  The I showed her how she could nibble on the monkey for relief.  After two years of searching for a teething product that works and entertains little ones, I finally find one in Kamala's Drool Monkey.

Day and night, Arabella is always with her Drool Monkey. Even on car rides, she needs to hold her blankie, and puts herself to sleep as she nibbles on it.  And, on the few occasions when Arabella falls asleep or drops her Drool Monkey to get another toy, Savannah quickly sneaks in and picks it up.  And, with her molars breaking through, I found her trying out the teething cloth and liking it as well.  I guess I have to buy another one just for her. :-)  In the meantime, I am freezing the organic hankies and letting Savannah chew on them, which she loves.  And, the hankies come in handy when on the go and you need to wipe the drool from your little one's mouth as they teeth.  And, in my case, I also use for their runny noses, as they are ultra soft and gentle on their delicate skin. :-)

♥  Made with Custom-woven Certified Organic Cotton Fabric
♥  Ultra-Soft & AbsorbentProtects delicate skin and sensitive noses
♥   Machine Washable & Dryable • Stays soft and smooth wash after wash
♥   Teach Good Hygiene • Sneeze, cough or blow at the adorable monkey
♥  Environmentally Friendly • Save trees and reduce waste
♥  Newborn Sleep Aid/Soother • Perfect size and breath-ability to absorb Mom’s scent to soothe
baby while away from Mom

So, if you have a teething baby or are looking for a unique and fun gift to give to an expectant or new mom, why not pick up the Drool Monkey cloth teether, or the organic hankies?  I was reading through one of my parenting magazines the other day and was happy to see celebrity mom, Selma Blair using it with her little one.  I thought it was only a matter of time before other moms would learn about this amazing must have and pick it up for their little ones.

As my daughter, Arabella, enjoys her Drool Monkey, I will be waiting to see what other unique must haves Kamala will add to the Drool Monkey collection.  And, when new items are adding, I will be one of the first in line to purchase them.  I can't stop raving about the Drool Monkey cloth teether and the organic hankies with friends and family, and know that once you try them out with your teething baby, you will fall in love with them, too.

Please enjoy my Spotlight on Mom interview with Kamala Corkin below, where she shares more about her journey with starting her business and coming up with the idea for the Drool Monkey.  Then, make sure you head on over to her website -

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How many children do you have? What are their ages? Your hobbies? Etc.
I'm a Mom of two. My daughter is 3.75 years old and my son is 15 months old. I used to Love to ride horses.
Briefly explain your business. How did it come about?
I’m always asked how and why I decided to design and manufacture organic baby products. It all started when I found out I was pregnant with my first child. Like all new moms I wanted to get only the best products for my baby. I researched every purchase and did lots of research on the benefits of organics. Now I didn’t ONLY buy organic, but I did try to make sure the products my baby would be in contact with the most were organic.
After my daughter was born and started to put everything in her mouth, I definitely wanted to make sure the cloth that she was sucking or chewing on all the time was safe. You can imagine how I felt when she started to chew on a traditional stuffed blanket lovie that was gifted to us. It was fuzzy, which I didn’t want her to ingest, and to top it off the care tag said surface wash only! I quickly hid that lovie and made her a makeshift one out of organic cloth. It wasn’t pretty but it was safe and I could wash and dry it daily, so I was assured that what she was chewing on was safe and clean. Well, she loved it and I realized it was something I couldn’t live without. I hand embroidered a monkey face on it (my first attempt ever at hand embroidery LOL) because we affectionately called our daughter our little Drool Monkey. People started asking me about it everywhere we went. That’s when the “lightbulb moment” happened and I thought that maybe I should explore the idea of improving the product and bringing it to market.
What is a typical work day like?
My days are filled with diapers, dancing and Drool Monkey.
What has been a struggle while starting up your company?
Fabric has been my main struggle. When I decided to start this company I had no idea how difficult it would be to weave organic cotton to my specifications. Two and a half years later I had exactly what I wanted organic cotton fabric that is ultra-soft, absorbent, strong and will wash and dry perfectly.
What did you do in your past work life?
I've always been in Sales and Marketing. The majority of my work like was in the wine industry. Changing from Wine to Organic Baby Products, a crazy leap, I know.
What have been some of your major successes?
I have found that everyone measures success differently. To me, seeing a photo or video of a child loving their Drool Monkey is just amazing. That is my success! Seeing Selma Blair photographer all over town for months using her Drool Monkey is unreal. We have also won awards and attracted media attention. We won the 2011 Top Choice award from Creative Child. I won the Born by Moms momprenuer contest from Spokesmoms. Drool Monkeys also been featured on Cool Mom Picks and Celebrity Baby Scoop.
What have been some of your major challenges?
My largest challenge is time and balance. Trying to raise a family and run a business all by yourself is very difficult. Sleep is a luxury these days.  Getting to this stage and having product on the shelf is my biggest success. It was a long and bumpy road to bring Drool Monkey to life.
On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?
Looking at a picture of a baby with their Drool Monkey and reading the great reviews I get from parents. That will usually get me motivated again.
What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?
I have not found the secret yet. If you have it, please share. I always end up doing the majority of my business work at night after the kids are in bed. It means less sleep for me but also less distractions.
What is next for your business?
I have many more ideas to add to the Drool Monkey Organics Family. New product additions and wider distribution is the goal. Hopefully Drool Monkeys will be available everywhere.
Do you have any advice for other mom entrepreneurs that are starting out and struggling, or are on the fence about starting a business?
I love to help other mom entrepreneurs. The mom entrepreneur industry is very supportive and will openly share their mistakes and successes. Having said that, I always like to warn mom entrepreneurs to the realities of starting your own business. You need to make sure that you are extremely passionate about your creation. There will be times when that passion will be the only thing keeping you going. Also be prepared for it to cost at least double what you think it will cost to get started and take twice the amount of time. Be prepared, have a strong support system in place, and GO FOR IT!!!!
